In 1954 the theatre renovation was complete. A new wide screen,
new sound, new seats, and a new name; "Showplace of
the River Parishes". He never forgot the fact that
he made his living from the community. He was always giving something
back. There were nickel matinees on Friday's for school kids,
Wednesday nights were free to widows and orphans, or he would
have matinees in which all the proceeds would go to a school.
In those days the nuns at St. Peter's weren't allowed movies
as recreation. But they could chaperone the children. So he would
have matinees in which the school kids would pay a nominal fee
and their "chaperones" went in for free. Also
interested in the children's education, he worked very closely
with Msgr. Jean Eyraud to build the St. Peter Parochial School
in 1930. He was very active in the St. Peter Catholic Community.
He furnished educational materials to many of the public schools
in the parish. |
